Discovering CS 3

Course Description

In this course, students embark on a comprehensive journey through computer science, mastering both technical skills and digital citizenship. They start by understanding computing systems, file management, and keyboarding before advancing to creative programming using the Scratch platform to build games and animations. The curriculum covers data visualization with Microsoft Excel and explores network fundamentals, including encryption and cybersecurity. Furthermore, students learn to navigate the digital world responsibly by understanding copyright, reliable sourcing, and adaptive technologies. This holistic approach empowers students to become proficient, responsible technology users and creators.

Course Learning Goals
  • Identify and understand the functions of basic computing hardware, software, and operating systems.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in file management, navigation, and advanced keyboarding techniques.

  • Create interactive stories and games using event-driven programming and animation in Scratch.

  • Apply data analysis skills to organize, visualize, and interpret information using Microsoft Excel charts and formulas.

  • Explain the fundamentals of computer networks, data transmission, and basic encryption methods.

  • Evaluate the reliability of digital information and apply proper citation and copyright practices.
